RESOURCES FOR GUN OWNERS
These are a few of our favorite gun-related resources.
Check back often, as this list will expand and change.
Maryland Handgun Qualification License (HQL)
The Maryland Handgun Qualification License (HQL) is needed for Maryland residents who wish to purchase, transfer, or rent a regulated firearm. An HQL is not needed for guns already owned.
Visit the Maryland State Police HQL website to learn more about applicable laws, procedures, accessing your account, and how to apply for your Maryland HQL.
PLEASE NOTE: As of January 1, 2021, the Maryland State Police Licensing Division has discontinued printing all Handgun Qualification Licenses (HQL). View their website for additional information.
Concealed Carry Reciprocity Map & US Gun Laws
As a Concealed Carry Permit Holder, it's your responsibility to know the transportation and carry gun laws in your home state, as well as, the states and jurisdictions that you travel to and through.
This USCCA Concealed Carry Reciprocity Map & U.S. Gun Laws site is a great place to start, but since laws can change frequently, I encourage you to visit the state police's firearms website for specific and up-to-date information.
Concealed Carry Insurance
I highly recommend that if you own a gun, that you also purchase someone's Concealed Carry Insurance.
Even if you don't plan on carrying your gun, concealed carry insurance can help protect you legally and financially should and incident occur.
This article on GunDigest.com provides a summary of six concealed carry insurance options that can get you started.
Explore all of your options and choose the company that best fits your needs. For example, some don't cover domestic violence incidents, some only cover incidents that involve the use of guns and not other weapons, and some may only cover you if an incident occurs in your home state.
Reading List
Let me begin by emphasizing there's no substitute for quality in-person education, hands-on training, mentorship and community when it comes to continuously honing the skills needed for your personal protection.
My personal firearms education extends beyond the classroom to books, articles, blogs, magazines, social media, and of course the University of YouTube. 😊
Here is a list of firearms related books I've read, am reading, or I'm planning to read to help me on my journey.
